Supplier Selection Process
UNFPA places a high priority on reproductive health commodity security (RHCS), which means that all individuals have access to affordable, quality reproductive health (RH) supplies of their choice when they need them. In commitment to procuring quality RH products, UNFPA evaluates and prequalifies suppliers based on internationally recognized quality standards before entering into any contractual agreements.
Long term partnerships with strategic suppliers
In order to ensure uninterrupted availability of supplies, UNFPA enters into Long Term Agreements (LTAs) with a wide variety of manufacturers. These agreements are based on open, public and competitive bidding processes. The agreements also define the specifications, standards, and prices of products. Having LTAs is place also ensures that orders can be placed without clients undergoing lengthy bidding processes. Allowing significant time savings.
The guiding principles behind UNFPA procurement activities are based on the concept of stewardship. As a public sector organization, UNFPA is entrusted to ensure that all public procurement activities achieve value for money, encourage efficiency, transparency, accountability, and uphold the highest ethical values.
UNFPA procurement functions follow stringent procurement procedures which give due consideration to the following principles: Best value for money; Fairness, integrity and transparency; Open and effective international competition; as well as the costs and benefits to the organization.
During the evaluation and analysis of commodities being procured, significant emphasis is placed on quality. In addition to quality, UNFPA takes into consideration a number of other relevant factors including: manufacturing capacity, production time and country registration.
By affording due consideration to these principles in the procurement process, UNFPA ensures effective and purposeful implementation of its activities by avoiding wastage of resources, producing the most appropriate solutions at all times, and addressing the needs of the organization and its clients.

How to become a UNFPA Supplier
UNFPA is the lead agency within the UN system for the procurement of reproductive health commodities. We actively seek to establish new relationships with suppliers of these commodities. Vendors wishing to do business with UNFPA should register with UNFPA through United Nations Global Market Place (UNGM).
How suppliers can participate
All UNFPA tenders are posted on the United Nations Global Marketplace. The bidding process is open primarily to manufacturers, or authorized representatives. Interested suppliers can respond to public notices issued through the United Nations Global Marketplace. Please refer to Quality Assurance page for information about the quality standards required by UNFPA.
Government bidding requirements
Many national regulations stipulate that procurement for the public sector must be conducted through public tenders. This may lead to the assumption that UNFPA procurement services cannot be utilized. Please note that though UNFPA does not typically engage in bidding for government contracts, UNFPA does conducts open, public and competitive bidding processes in the establishment of all its own long term supplier agreements.
Therefore rather than bidding for a government contract, UNFPA is able to offer price quotations for LTA products that have already undergone public bidding and rigorous quality assurance processes.
